RECETOX`s research in media

Biological effects of a substance used in cosmetic products were published in a number of the Czech and Slovak newspapers and in electronic media - Masaryk University journal MUNI, Czech News Agency (ČTK), Lidovky, Novinky, Deník, ČTK and Hospodářské noviny last week.

In addition, several radio and TV stations also became interested in our work on the ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (EHMC). It is the active substance, one of the most used UV filters in sunscreens, but also lip balms, lipsticks, scents, hairsprays and other cosmetics. This substance is safe from the toxicological point of view, but upon exposure to UV tradition a molecular rearrangement (isomerization) occurs. Pavel Čupr's team focused on the toxic effects of the resulting cis- isomer and found that this chemical exhibits a significant genotoxic potential upon in vitro human cell exposure (including stem cells). Based on the results, it is necessary to re-evaluate the use of this substance in products as well as to inform the relevant European Union institutions dealing with the health effects of substances.
