Laboratory of trace analyses provides analytical background for other divisions of the Centre. Experienced professional staff works in the QA/QC system and applies validated analytical methods using modern equipment for extractions, fractionations and purification of samples. Instrumentation includes high resolution gas chromatograph (HR GC-HRMS) and low resolution chromatographic and mass spectrometry techniques such as GC-MS (triple and single quadrupole; ion trap; electrone and chemical ionization), GC-ECD and GC-FID for analyses of non-polar compounds, HPLC-MS (triple quadrupole and Q-trap), HPLC-FLD, HPLC-DAD, HPLC-ECD for analyses of organic pollutants; ICP-MS for analyses of organometals, toxic metals and speciation analyses.

Beside traditionally analysed persistent organic pollutants such as polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorine pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, further analyses include polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans, polychlorinated naphthalenes and new types of pollutants (brominated flame retardants, short and medium chain chlorinated paraffins, perfluorinated compounds). Analyses are also focused on polar pesticides including their metabolites, explosives, steroids and natural toxins (cyanobacterial peptides and alkaloids). Analyzed inorganic compounds include elemental composion of samples, toxic metals and their species.

Laboratory is also covering several monitoring programmes including long-term monitoring of abiotic matrices (air, precipitation, soil, water, sediments) and biota (needles, mosses and lichens) at background station of the EMEP network in Košetice (in cooperation with the Czech hydrometeorological institute). Another important project is the national network of air monitoring MONET based on passive samplers. Monitoring network is currently expanding to all European countries and number of other countries in Africa and Asia.

Laboratory cooperates with several institutions and industrial companies addressing short- and medium-term problems of environmental contamination (APOPSBAL, 5FP EU project), impacts of ecological disasters (ECODIS, 6FP EU project), climate changes (ARCRISK, 7FP EU project) or remediation of contaminated soils (isoSOIL, 7FP EU project).

  • air sampling by active and passive samplers
  • sampling of precipitation and surface waters, sediments, soils and biotic materials
  • analyses of all above mentioned matrices for polychlorinated biphenyls, naphthalenes, organochlorine pesticides, chlorinated paraffins, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and others
