The project, titled Hazardous Beauty: Pesticides in Cut Flowers, received a €50,000 grant from a European program supported by the Journalism Science Alliance to investigate the extent of pesticide contamination in cut flowers. Unlike food products, cut flowers are not subject to EU regulations defining maximum residue limits for pesticides. This legislative loophole allows, among other things, the import and sale of flowers treated with substances that are otherwise banned in the EU.
“We plan to analyze approximately 120 flower samples representing different plant species, types of retail outlets – chains, small flower shops, supermarkets – and geographical origins, including local production, flowers from the EU, and non-EU countries. Using advanced analytical methods, we will test the samples for approximately 200 pesticide substances, including both currently used and banned chemicals,” explains Jakub Hofman regarding the scientific side of the project.
The topic is particularly relevant for florists and other workers who regularly handle cut flowers and may face repeated, long-term exposure to these substances through skin contact or inhalation.
The researchers will look beyond the mere presence of chemicals to assess their potential hazards and properties, such as their ability to off-gas from flowers and contribute to indoor exposure.
RECETOX is responsible for the scientific design, sampling, laboratory analysis, and data interpretation. The Ekonews team, led by project manager and editor-in-chief Martina Patočková, will collaborate closely with the scientists. They will interview florists, shop owners, and other workers, mapping key players across the supply chain. This will result in a series of multimedia outputs based on systematic data, contributing to broader European debate on pesticides.
By combining scientific analysis and journalistic investigation, the partners aim to provide the first data-driven overview of pesticide contamination in cut flowers in the Czech Republic. Contributing to discussions on occupational pesticide exposure, consumer protection, and regulatory gaps.
