PCBs were once considered an industrial miracle due to their exceptional properties: chemical stability, thermal conductivity, non-flammability, and resistance to oxidation. Despite their industrial usefulness, they turned out to be among the most problematic contaminants of the modern era. PCBs were included in the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). National POPs disposal plans, which outline the basic framework for eliminating selected POPs, are the subject of projects coordinated by RECETOX.

From industrial ecology in Siberia to environmental research in the Czech Republic, that’s the story of PhD researcher Daria Sapunova. At RECETOX, she investigates how invisible chemicals in our environment — such as bisphenols and PFAS — affect human health. In this interview, she shares her journey, explains the science behind her work, and offers practical advice on how we can all reduce our exposure to harmful substances.

In a newly published study in Environmental Science: Advances, researchers from RECETOX demonstrated that temperature and seasonal changes significantly influence the amount of flame retardants released from materials inside car interiors. The study is the first of its kind to simultaneously measure the concentrations of these substances in air, dust, and the interior materials themselves. The results show that some chemicals, such as phosphate flame retardant TCEP, reach concentrations up to 700 times higher in summer car air than in winter.

We have a new Dean! The Faculty’s Academic Senate has decided that, from the beginning of February next year, when the second term of the current Dean, Tomáš Kašparovský, ends, Luděk Bláha, the current Vice-Dean for Doctoral Studies of the Faculty of Science, MU, will take over for the next four years. The Senate’s choice must first be confirmed by the Rector, who will then appoint the new Dean.

Dear colleagues,
today, I would like to share a few ideas on the topic of "How to build a healthy, inclusive, and engaged work environment" which is one of MU's strategic topics.
For those who are interested in this topic, there are options available "from your computer" with Amy Edmondson's questionnaire on psychological safety in the workplace can be viewed here (English) and in the video Amy Edmondson: Creating Psychological Safety at Work (English). Another option is to view the online course Social Safety in the Academic Environment for MU staff.
And, of course, I also offer my full support.
