RECETOX News 2/2021

The 20 best innovators of 2020

Julie Dobrovolná from RECETOX, Masaryk University was one of the 20 to be awarded in the CzechCrunch and Hospodářské Noviny’s “Innovators 2020” project.

Twenty innovators from several hundred public nominations were selected by a jury composed of prominent business figures, such as investor Ondřej Fryc, fashion designer Liběna Rochová, Lasvit glass owner Leon Jakimič, Livesport founder Martin Hájek, Unuodesign textile owner Petra Plemlová, top artificial Intelligence expert Tomáš Mikolov, Martin Wichterle from the Wikov Industry group, co-founder of the Frusack start-up Hana Fořtová and also Michaela Lhotková from ČSOB.

The group is interdisciplinary but thematically is dominated by three main subjects: the involvement of technology in the fight against covid-19, sustainability, and education.

Meeting with Brno city representatives

On Thursday, February 4, RECETOX’s Director, Jana Klánová, and several research group heads, including Pavel Čupr, Hynek Pikhart and Martin Bobák, met with Brno’s Deputy Mayor Tomáš Koláčný and several of the city’s department heads.

During the meeting, RECETOX presented results from ongoing cooperation with the city, such as air quality monitoring in selected Brno kindergartens and primary schools and projects such as Icarus, Urban-X, and CETOCOEN Excellence.

The parties also discussed other collaboration options, for example, using RECETOX’s unique CELSPAC population studies.

RECETOX looks forward to furthering collaboration with the city!

New PhDs at RECETOX

On Thursday, 10th of February, Ondřej Brózman (supervised by P. Babica) and Julian Vazquez Gonzalvez (supervised by V. Šindelář) successfully defended their dissertation theses. Congratulations!

Internal information

SOČ in 2021

RECETOX has participated in high school projects for many years. The goal of this activity is to allow exploring of interesting scientific topics for high school students (such as study od literature, experiments, writing of thesis and its defence in a national competition). Many of these high school projects supervised by our colleagues took top places in the regional and national competition. The high school students can try science by themselves due to these projects, and they may gain motivation for the whole life. RECETOX supports the supervision of high school projects by 5000 CZK reward. This activity is newly counted in „XD102 Teaching assistance“ for PhD students. This high school project topic can be written and communicated in English, but the thesis needs to be written and defended in the Czech language.

Until March the 1, you can announce your topic due to South Moravian Centre for International Mobility, you can get financial support (5000 CZK supervisor reward and 20 000 CZK for material).

More information about high school projects  (time schedule, realized projects at RECETOX, archive of theses,..) you can find HERE.

If you plan to offer a high school project or you want to know more information, please contact Katerina Novakova (katerina.novakova@recetox.muni.cz)

PhD defense of Foppe Smedes

Our colleague Foppe Smedes, who is a recognized member of research group of Branislav Vrana, will online defend his PhD thesis on Monday 22nd of February 2021 at 1:45 pm at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam; promotors  are Prof. Dr Jacob de Boer and Prof. Dr Philipp Mayer, and co-promotors, Dr. Kees Booij and Dr Branislav Vrana.  The thesis „Passive Sampling: Effective sensing of environmental quality“ contains a coherent selection from Foppe’s work on passive sampling in the last 25 years, booming during the last five years at RECETOX.

You are welcome to join the ceremony online via a live stream. A preface and more info can be found here.

Expert group established to support ERC applicants from the Czech Republic

In January 2021, Charles University and the Czech Academy of Sciences signed a Joint declaration establishing an Expert group to support applicants in ERC calls. The Expert group will consist of a coordinator and three members from the basic research areas as divided by the ERC. The main task will be to systematically support ERC grant applicants at national level. Further information (in Czech) can be found at the website of the Technology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Portal Vědavýzkum.cz.

To support or internal applicants at RECETOX, we have established our internal advisory ERC panel to help our colleagues, who are applying for ERC project to develop excellent proposals.
