Biomarker Analysis Laboratory

The Biomarker Analytical Laboratories apply mass spectrometry assays for the routine measurement of protein and chemical biomarkers. The lab hosts a chemical bank of authentic standards, mass spectral libraries and dedicated compound databases.

Services include:

  • Targeted quantification of peptide markers associated with inflammation & immune response
  • Profiling of intermediary metabolites with options for quantification
  • Collaborative study design & support for customised method development
  • Tailored training for sample preparation & data interpretation

Services

The Core facility is equipped with the following equipment and expertise:

Analysis and equipment

Target protein and metabolite analysis

  • Quantification of inflammatory proteins (i.e. SAA1, SAA2, SAA4, CRP, A1AT, A1AG) including corresponding proteoforms (i.e. SAA2alpha, SAA2beta, A1AT1, A1AG1, A1AG2) and adaptive immunity effector IGHA1, in dried blood spots
  • Quantification of adaptive immunity effectors (i.e. IGHA1, IGHA2) and immune protein markers (i.e. A1AT, ECP, EDN, MPO, CAL1, CAL2) in neonatal meconium and fecal swabs
  • Quantification of adipophilin and perilipin-3 in breast milk
  • Quantification of tryptophan-derived microbiome co-metabolites (5-hydroxyindolacetate, 5-hydroxy-l-tryptophan, 5-methoxy-3-indolacetic acid, anthranilate, indole-3-acetamide, indole-3-acetate, indole-3-aldehyde, indole-3-butyric acid, indole-3-lactic acid, indole-3-propionic acid, L-kynurenine, L-tryptophan, melatonin, methyl indole-3-acetate, methyl indole-3-propionic acid, N-acetyl tryptophan, serotonin, tryptamine) in dried blood spots, urine, meconium & nasopharyngeal swabs

Metabolomics & exposomics

  • Profiling via high resolution/accurate mass (HRAM) mass spectrometry
  • Q Exactive GC Orbitrap GC-MS/MS
  • UHPLC-Orbitrap Fusion Tribrid MS

Training

Our researchers have extensive training experience in their respective fields of research. Trainings are tailored to the customer’s needs, however, are mainly focused on sample preparation, analysis, familiarization with laboratory technique and data interpretation. Training is done in the RECETOX laboratories.

Consultation

Information regarding specific methods of analysis or planning is provided by Elliott Price, who heads the laboratory.

Access

Access to the laboratories is available to academic users and researchers, including representatives of the commercial sphere and industry. Academic users and researchers can access through the Open Access project. Application for access available at: https://openaccess.recetox.cz/. Industrial users can directly contact coordinator of RECETOX Research Infrastructure RNDr. Petra Růžičková, Ph.D. (openaccess@recetox.muni.cz), who will answer questions about available capacities, expertise and other conditions of cooperation.
