Martin Toul: Stroke treatment can be considerably more effective
In a detailed analysis of thrombolytic proteins, Ph.D. student Martin Toul discovered previously overlooked properties of the staphylokinase protein. Protein engineering methods can improve its efficiency by up to ten thousand times, which would make the protein a perfect candidate for stroke treatment. This discovery represents a breakthrough and could lead to a far more effective drug than those currently used clinically.
Lucie Ráčková: Studying isolation and stress in Antarctica. Next stop, space?
Ph.D. student Lucie Ráčková, working at the Environmental Physiology research group, RECETOX, studies the relationship between isolation and acute and chronic stress. As a polar expedition member to the J.G. Mendel Station on James Ross Island, Antarctica, she investigated how polar explorers perceive separation from their daily lives and whether they feel stressed. Read more to find out why stress in Antarctica matters, what life is like on a polar station, and what is ahead of Lucie.
And how old is your brain? The new episode of the CELSPAC series "Get to know your scientist" is online!
In this episode, neuroscientist Klára Marečková discusses the effect of stress during pregnancy on the offspring's brain. Her research shows that maternal stress during the first half of pregnancy is associated with more symptoms of depression in young adulthood.
On March 18, 2022, the final conference of the HERA project - Health and Environment Research Agenda for Europe - took place in Paris. HERA’s main objective was to identify critical areas that the EU should prioritize to prevent irreversible changes to ecosystems and their accompanying harmful impacts on human health. As a project partner, RECETOX participated in the discussions on the identified research areas.
Luděk Bláha as the Discipline Commission Chair at GACR

Science and PhD study programes evaluation
An international evaluation of science and doctoral study programs will take place at RECETOX on 21 and 22 April. The event will be realized within the university-wide evaluation (IHV MUNI) and within the evaluation of the TEAMING project. Four external evaluators, prof. Jana Roithová (Radboud University, NL), prof. Robert Barouki (INSERM, Paris, FR), prof. Bryan Brooks (Baylor University, TX, USA) and prof. John Giesy (University of Saskatchewan, CA) will focus on the center's scientific performance and strategy, institutional environment, center management, and the quality of doctoral programs.
Global Environment & Health challenges
RECETOX, in cooperation with the Learned Society of the Czech Republic and the Brno Observatory and Planetarium, is organizing a panel discussion on Global Environment & Health challenges. It will take place on Monday, 25th of April at 15:00 in the planetarium. You are all cordially invited to this event.

Project Events
The Technology Centre CAS is organising on 26 April 2022 the Online Information Day on Marie Skłodowska Curie Action Postdoctoral Fellowships (MSCA PF), focused on the 2022 Call.
The Information Day on MSCA PF is designed to familiarize participants with this type of grant. This event is primarily for researchers considering applying to MSCA PF but also for project managers and those who will be supporting the applicants when preparing their project proposals.
You can register till 24 April 2022 (23:59). More information on the event is available HERE.
14 April 2022 - MSCA-PF candidates‘ training hour – regular eventorganized by MUNI and Palacký University Olomouc (a regularone-hourtrainingeachThursdayfrom 11:00 to 12:00, with last session on 26.5.2022; no session on 5.5.2022); registrationnecessary
Luděk Sehnal's NAfrAM project received financial support from the European Union's MSCA EF-LIF program (European Fellowship, Life Sciences panel). He will conduct his research in laboratories led by Professor Ziemert in Tübingen, Germany, where he will study and use the genetic information of Antarctic microorganisms to characterize their biosynthetic potential and discover new antimicrobials.
The main goal of the NAfrAM project is to characterize the overall biosynthetic potential hidden across (meta)genomes of microorganisms from different types of Antarctic ecosystems (lakes, streams, wetlands). The project thus responds to the problem of a long-term decline in the development of antibiotics and the associated lack of highly effective substances. Congratulations to Luděk for his great success.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions – Postdoctoral Fellowships (MSCA-PF) 2022
Are you looking for funding for your postdoctoral stay? One of the Horizon Europe programmes – Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions – offers prestigious Postdoctoral Fellowships (former Individual Fellowships). The Postdoctoral Fellowships target researchers holding a PhD who wish to carry out their research activities abroad, acquire new skills, gain experience in other countries, disciplines and non-academic sectors, and develop their careers. You can apply for European Fellowships (12-24 months, to come to Europe or move within) or Global Fellowships (12-24 months in a third country + 12 months mandatory return phase in Europe). If you apply with MUNI (check if you comply with the mobility rule), there are two other options for alternative funding of your research - ERA Fellowships (former Widening Fellowships) and Operational Programme John Amos Comenius managed by the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. You can find further information about MSCA-PF at the website of the RECETOX Grant Office or contact directly Mirjana Stanojević (mirjana.stanojevic@recetox.muni.cz).
Call for MSCA-PF-2022 is expected to open on 12th May 2022 withthedeadlineforsubmissionofproposals on 14th September 2022.
