RECETOX Evaluation
On April 21st and 22nd, the RECETOX research center was evaluated by three independent evaluators - prof. Jana Roithová, prof. Bryan Brooks and prof. Robert Barouki. The evaluators focused not only on the scientific performance of the center and the implementation of doctoral study programs, but also on its management, financing and other aspects of its operation.
The evaluation took place not only within the university-wide Institutional Evaluation of Science, which will take place at all departments of the university during the year, but also within the TEAMING project. The results of the evaluation should be known during the month of May.
Many thanks to everyone who took an active part in the evaluation.
Global environment and health challenges
On 25 April 2022, presentations and a panel discussion on the global environment and health challenges were held at the Brno Observatory and Planetarium. The event, hosted by RECETOX, in cooperation with the Learned Society of the Czech Republic and the Brno Observatory and Planetarium, featured three international experts. The event also included the screening of the 3D film "Space Circus" and an informal meeting with the speakers.
One step closer to the therapeutic use of carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide is a life-threatening toxic gas, but it also performs important reparative functions in the body. Until now, its use in therapy has been hindered by the challenge associated with its administration. A possible solution is to administer carbon monoxide using a novel molecular carrier. Prof. Petr Klán and his team have been working on such a molecule allowing the release of carbon monoxide in target tissues by using light. Their research was published in the prestigious Journal of Organic Chemistry in March 2022 and selected for the ACS Editors' Choice.
Representatives of 13 (out of 17) countries in the EIRENE consortium met in Vienna on May 4, 2022, to discuss next steps in building the pan-European human exposome research infrastructure. The morning session covered mainly the upcoming Horizon Europe EIRENEPPP project. In the afternoon session, country representatives described the status and progress in their countries. Specifically, they presented an overview of their respective research activities, existing research infrastructure capacities, and progress toward establishing their national hubs. The Consortium will meet again in October for the EIRENE PPP project kick-off meeting, which will take place as part of the ICRI 2022, in Brno, Czech Republic.
Do you think it's just the air you're breathing? Find out from the new epizodeof the CELSPAC series "Get to know your scientist"
Air expert Ondřej Mikeš presents his research focused on the development of polluted air in the outdoor environment, but also inside our homes. The quality of the air is also affected, for example, by what cleaning agents we use or when we ventilate.
Natálie Šelleová: I'm not a lab person, but I want to change legislation as a scientist
Natálie Šelleová is a second-year bachelor's student in Environment and Health. Although she does not want to work in a lab in the future, human health and environmental issues are her top-of-mind priorities. After her studies, she desires to be a person explaining complex scientific issues to the public and politicians and contributes to legislation changes.
