RECETOX News 2/2022
RECETOX supports Stick to Science initiative
RECETOX supports the broad online Stick to Science initiative, which responds to the delayed negotiations on the association of the United Kingdom and Switzerland with the EU Horizon Europe program. Researchers are jointly calling for accelerated launch of association agreements. Both countries are important research partners and their exclusion from Horizon Europe brings uncertainty to European research. More about the initiative is here.
Get to know your scientist: Gabriela and Albert Kšiňan
Is it normal to offer alcohol to teenage children at home? In the Czech Republic, yes. Thinking that they will drink more responsibly, parents often offer their teenager a glass of beer with lunch or a drink at a family party. But can't this have the opposite effect? That's what psychologists Gabriela and Albert Kšiňan will explore in the second part of the Get to know your scientist series. They have based their research on alcohol on data from the ELSPAC longitudinal study.
A negative effect of the pandemic: millions in the UK drink harmful amounts of alcohol at home
The number of Brits consuming large amounts of alcohol at home has risen by two million over the last year. The coronavirus pandemic has affected alcohol consumption habits. People forced to stay in their homes succumbed to drinking as a coping mechanism for dealing with insecurity and stress. In mid-January, the British newspaper The Guardian published an article on the increased alcohol consumption in British homes. We asked Dr. Albert Kšiňan, who deals with this topic in his research, to comment on this article from the perspective of the Czech Republic.
Toxicologist working at RECETOX, Brno, gets scientific award from the King of Sweden: Interview with Dr. Sebastian Lungu-Mitea
Dr. Sebastian Lungu-Mitea became a new member of Dr. Klára Hilscher's research group in November 2021. Although he conducted his PhD in Uppsala, Sweden, he found the work of the RECETOX bioanalytical toxicology group so interesting that he decided to move to the South Moravian metropolis. Sebastian preferred Brno to Uppsala - even though he received an award for his scientific work directly from the hands of the Swedish King.

SOČ in 2022
RECETOX has participated in high school projects for many years. The goal of this activity is to allow exploring of interesting scientific topics for high school students (such as study od literature, experiments, writing of thesis and its defence in a national competition). Many of these high school projects supervised by our colleagues took top places in the regional and national competition. The high school students can try science by themselves due to these projects, and they may gain motivation for the whole life.
RECETOX supports the supervision of high school projects by 5000 CZK reward. This activity is newly counted in „XD102 Teaching assistance“ for Ph.D. students. This high school project topic can be written and communicated in English, but the thesis needs to be written and defended in the Czech language.
Until March the 1, you can announce your topic due to South Moravian Centre for International Mobility (https://www.jcmm.cz/projekt/soc_ucitele), you can get financial support (5000 CZK supervisor reward and 10 000 to 20 000 CZK for material).
LA grants - Czech Science Foundation is in the role of a partner organization. The deadline is according to foreign agencies - currently, project proposals can still be submitted in cooperation with the German agency DFG, the Austrian agency FWF, the American NSF, the Luxembourg agency FNR, the Slovenian agency ARRS and the Swiss agency SNSF).
Please, if you are interested in any call, contact Nikola Stejskalova immediately.
