Polychlorinated biphenyls in RECETOX partner countries

PCBs were once considered an industrial miracle due to their exceptional properties: chemical stability, thermal conductivity, non-flammability, and resistance to oxidation. Despite their industrial usefulness, they turned out to be among the most problematic contaminants of the modern era. PCBs were included in the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). National POPs disposal plans, which outline the basic framework for eliminating selected POPs, are the subject of projects coordinated by RECETOX.

Successful risk assessment training in Podgorica

A two-day training on Environmental and Human Health Risk Assessment of Chemicals in the EU – Principles and Regulatory Practices was held in hotel Ramada in Podgorica, Montenegro, 25–26 August 2025. The training was organized by the RECETOX Stockholm Convention Regional Centre in collaboration with the Centre for Eco-Toxicological Research, Montenegro in the framework of the GEF project on Update of the National Implementation Plan under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.

21st RECETOX Summer School

The 21st RECETOX Summer School took place from June 9 to 13, 2025, at the RECETOX center in Brno. This year's event was divided into two consecutive blocks, offering participants a comprehensive educational program in the field of chemical risk assessment. The event attracted a total of 55 participants from 31 countries around the world, including scientists, doctoral students, and experts from regulatory institutions.

Inventory validation meeting in the North Macedonia

Ekomozaik, RECETOX and Ministry of Environmental Protection and Physical Planning of the North Macedonia organized a full day meeting in Holiday Inn hotel in Skopje on 10 June 2025. The meeting was part of the implementation of the GEF project 10785 (Global Review and Update of the National Implementation Plans under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants).

Meetings in Astana

Within the GEF supported project 10924 on Review and Update of the National Implementation Plan (NIP) for the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Albania, Armenia and Kazakhstan a several meetings with KZ authorities took place in early June 2025.

Inventory validation meeting in Georgia

Half-way milestone in the project implementation was achieved on 27 May 2025 with a successfully completed Inventory validation meeting held in the Rooms Hotel in Tbilisi, Georgia. The meeting was supported by the GEF project 10785 and organized in collaboration with the Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia and the Stockholm Convention Regional Centre hosted at RECETOX.

Moldova Refines Inventory and Submits Plan for Complete Elimination of Polychlorinated Biphenyls Equipment

Moldova has become the first of eight pilot countries to complete the project of refining the inventory of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB). Support for implementation was provided by the Stockholm Convention Regional Centre (SCRC) from RECETOX. The closing meeting was attended by more than 30 participants.

On Tuesday, January 28, the PARC: A New Era in Risk Assessment conference was held in Prague, aiming to present the international Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals (PARC) to more than fifty representatives of government institutions and research infrastructures within the context of the innovative framework of European partnerships under the Horizon Europe program.
