RECETOX News 9/2021

Start of the semester

New bachelor and master students are joining RECETOX with the third year of realization of our new study programmes. This school year, 29 students in the Environment and Health programme and the same number of students in the Mathematical Biology and Biomedicine program will begin their bachelor's studies. A total of eight students enter the master's programs, three of them the Environment and Health and five the Mathematical Biology and Biomedicine. Since January 2021, a total of 16 doctoral students have also started their doctoral studies.

South Moravian Region Science festival 2021

On September 3-4, the annual South Moravian Region Science Festival was held at the Brno Riviera. This year a record number of activities awaited visitors, and RECETOX, as every year, was present. Over the course of the two-day event, more than 6,600 people attended, including families with children and primary schools.

We thank all the volunteers from RECETOX for their help in organizing the event and their great approach towards the "young scientists" who, according to the feedback, really enjoyed the event.

Regular seminars and lectures

The start of the semester brings back also various seminars and events organized inside or outside of RECETOX. Explore the schedule of RECETOX Seminar Series, Life Science Seminar Series or Mendel Lectures. Try and find interesting topics, excellent speakers and possibilities of scientific collaboration.

PhD evaluations

As every year, our RECETOX PhD students undergone the annual evaluation during this summer. Thirty-six students, out of sixty-two, met with prof. Luděk Bláha, prof. Jana Klánová and their supervisor to discuss their study and research progress. We are happy, that majority of them succeeded well and some issues in progress were identified at just two students. We foresee that eight dissertation theses should be submitted before the end of the year, so new PhDs are on the way.

Michal Bittner: Fulbright at Baylor University

Michal Bittner has already begun his Fulbright scholarship at Baylor University in Texas, where he collaborates with prof. Bryan W. Brooks, a world expert in aquatic toxicology.

But a stay abroad is not all hard work in the laboratories – check out the photo sent by prof. Brooks of our colleague and his family at their very first American football game!
