PRORISK brings together a unique network of scientists that have a strong interdisciplinary background in chemistry, biology, environ-ment as well as socio-economical sciences. Every partner exhibits cutting edge scientific expertise in a specific field required for driving an integrated approach beyond the state of the art (see Figure).
The competences within PRORISK are thus highly complementary offering a unique training platform for the new generation of young scientists in the holistic assessment of chemical risks to ecosystem services and their potential socio-economic impacts. The comple-mentarity is further strengthen by exposure of the ESRs to the non-academic sectors through a complex set of secondments, trainings, and the role of the advisory board.

Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic is the second largest university in the Czech Republic with over 5000 employees and 39000 students. Academic research and education at VU Amsterdam is characterised by a high level of ambition, and encourages free and open communication and ideas. The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) performs research on environmental issues related to fresh and seawater environments. The work performed by NIVA includes aquatic chemical and biological monitoring, ecotoxicological studies, hazard and risk assessment, ecotoxicogenomics (transcriptomics and bioinformatics), water quality assessments and water management.
University of Girona (UdG)

The UdG group belongs to the Institute of Aquatic Ecology (IEA), a university research institute of the University of Girona founded in 1987 and focused on the interdisciplinary study of continental aquatic ecosystems (lakes and lagoons, rivers and streams, reservoirs, wetlands, etc.). The research of the UdG group is being developed in fluvial systems, with a special interest in the functioning of the ecosystems and the response of the different biological communities. The research group includes experts in different areas of the aquatic ecology, from the biogeochemistry to the dynamics of the biological communities and ecosystem functioning.

The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is the largest research institution at National level currently ascribed to the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. The participants belong to the Center for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB), a CSIC research institute focused on the biology and ecology of aquatic ecosystems. The research of the Integrative Freshwater Ecology (IFE) group of CSIC-CEAB is focused on the quantitative and qualitative study of the interactions between abiotic and biotic factors across different levels of organization (from genes to ecosystems).

DTU Management Engineering is one of the largest university departments in Europe specialising in competitiveness, productivity, quantitative sustainability, innovation and entrepreneurship and has around 300 international employees, hereof 85 PhD students. The Division for Quantitative Sustainability Assessment (QSA) develops science-based methods and tools for decision support within environmental sustainability and has extensive experience on all aspects of chemicals in the environment and their impacts on ecosystems. QSA obtains funding from authorities, industry and research funds and have coordinated and participated in many EU FP6/FP7 and other international projects.

ECT has participated in numerous national and international research projects and also coordinated and managed such projects. ECT has profound expertise in assessing the ecotoxicity of a broad range of environmentally relevant substances with aquatic, sediment-dwelling and terrestrial organisms according to standard methods. ECT adapts, develops and validates ecotoxicological test methods at laboratory, semi-field and field scales. RIWA-Rijn is a cooperation of Dutch water supply companies that use surface water for the production of drinking water, including three independent sections for the rivers Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt. RIWA-Rijn promotes the general interests of the river water supply companies, and collaborates with organisations and governments inside and outside the Netherlands.
