Susanna's secondment at NIVA Copenhagen and Oslo

Our ESR Susanna Mölkänen spent her secondment at the two offices of Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) - Copenhagen (December 2022) and Oslo (January 2023). The goal of her hybrid secondment was to link exposure data to effects on chemical endpoints in individuals for use with an individual based model. You can read her experiences in this short report.

Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) hosted me for a hybrid secondment from December 2022 to January 2023 which included on-site visits to two of their offices; Copenhagen (December 2022) and Oslo (January 2023). The goal of the secondment was to link exposure data to effects on chemical endpoints in individuals for use with an individual based model.

At NIVA Denmark (based in Copenhagen) I worked with Jes Rasmussen to plan and design a proof of concept case study on a Danish river site which would serve as the basis for linking exposure data to effects to freshwater recreational fisheries.

As I was in Copenhagen close to the run up to Christmas, I got to see the holiday decorations and beautiful Christmas markets around the city. Also, the amazing floating Saint Lucia Day parade on kayaks in the Copenhagen canals was also during my visit.

The second part of my secondment involved working with both Dr. Knut Erik Tollefsen and Jes Rasmussen at NIVA Oslo (main office) where I underwent training on NIVA RAdb. I then applied this training to analyse the proof of concept study developed earlier in the secondment. I was also able to gain further knowledge on risk assessment and see how NIVA RAdb is applied.

Although it was wintertime in Oslo, I was lucky to have a few days of clear skies and sunshine. Oslo is a beautiful place with great scenery, architecture, and art.
