The first two-day block (June 9-10) focused on the key principles of environmental and health assessment of chemicals in the context of European legislation. This block was a significant part of the capacity building of experts in risk assessment and was organized with the support of the Czech Ministry of the Environment and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The program provided an overview of theoretical foundations and practical tools used in risk assessment, with the participation of experts from RECETOX and WHO. Participants learned about the differences between prospective and retrospective risk assessments, an integrated approach to health and ecological aspects, and specific areas such as pesticides, biocides, and environmental monitoring according to the Water Framework Directive. The block also included a tour of the RECETOX laboratories and hands-on work with GIS tools.
From June 11 to 13, the main professional training took place, organized under the auspices of the European research infrastructure EIRENE with the support of the PARC project – Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals. This block focused on new approaches (NAMs) in chemical assessment. The program included lectures and practical demonstrations on the identification of developmental neurotoxicants, endocrine disruptors, or non-genotoxic carcinogens and the use of omics technologies. The training also included tours of the biobank and analytical laboratories of the RECETOX research infrastructure. The training was led by lecturers from five European countries and the RECETOX home team, which supported international exchange of experiences and networking. Participants appreciated the balance of theory and practice, the high professional level, and the inspiring atmosphere.
