Long-Term Air Monitoring Shows Pesticides Aren’t Gone—They’re Coming Back

Persistent pesticides continue to pollute our air decades after their ban, a new long-term study at the Czech National Atmospheric Observatory reveals. From 10–12 November 2025, the town of Hustopeče hosted the 24th annual conference “Air Quality in Time”, organized by the Czech Aerosol Society (ČAS) in cooperation with the research infrastructures RECETOX and ACTRIS-CZ. The program featured plenary lectures, thematic sessions, a poster section, and the traditional young scientists’ competition – the Dekati Award.

The international conference „Occupational Surveillance and Environmental Health“ was organized on 18.-21. November in Fez, the city where the Kairaouine madrasa was founded in 859, described by UNESCO as the oldest university in the world. The conference supported by BioNet, the Euro-African Biomonitoring Network, took place in the impressive new campus of the Euromed University in Fez. BioNet is an ERASMUS project co-funded by the European Union to enhance closer cooperation between European and African universities by co-building capacities for the assessment of environmental exposure in the population.

Knowledge lab at COP6 of the Minamata Convention on Mercury

The EIRENE consortium together with the PARC partnership have organized a joint knowledge lab at the 6th Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury held in Geneva, Switzerland 3-7 November 2025. The session entitled “How Partnerships and Research Infrastructures Enhance Implementation of the Minamata Convention” held on 5th November 2025 in the exhibition area, showcased innovative tools supporting national implementation of the Convention, including a real-time mercury data platform, population exposure and risk mitigation tools, and an open-access research infrastructure as opportunity for an open access and long term collaboration.

From Import to Impact: Assessing the Presence and Management of HBCD in RECETOX partner countries

Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is a brominated flame retardant that has been widely used since the late 1960s to reduce the flammability of various materials. This white crystalline powder found its primary application in expanded polystyrene and extruded polystyrene foams used in building insulation, accounting for approximately 90% of global HBCD use. Minor applications included textile back-coatings, high-impact polystyrene for electronics casings, and various consumer products.

This year’s 45th edition of the DIOXIN conference took place in the first week of November in Antalya, Turkey. One of its sections focused on chemical management and the contribution of science to the implementation of international conventions protecting human health from the impacts of chemical exposure. The organizers dedicated this section to the memory of Ivan Holoubek, who devoted a large part of his professional life to work for the UN Environment Programme and to supporting chemical conventions, and who spent several years working on international projects in Turkey. His legacy was highlighted in the opening presentation by Ipek Imamoglu.

EU Parliament adopted the Soil Monitoring law

The EU has taken a major step toward protecting soil health. In October 2025, the European Parliament adopted the Soil Monitoring Law to harmonize soil assessments across Member States, support farmers to improve soil fitness and resilience, and address emerging threats like microplastics. The overall objective of the directive is to achieve healthy soils by 2050. A public list of potentially contaminated soils will be created across all EU countries, and simplified procedures for Member States will be implemented without adding new obligations for farmers or foresters.

Scientists have found that summer heat significantly increases the release of flame retardants in cars

In a newly published study in Environmental Science: Advances, researchers from RECETOX demonstrated that temperature and seasonal changes significantly influence the amount of flame retardants released from materials inside car interiors. The study is the first of its kind to simultaneously measure the concentrations of these substances in air, dust, and the interior materials themselves. The results show that some chemicals, such as phosphate flame retardant TCEP, reach concentrations up to 700 times higher in summer car air than in winter.

Polychlorinated biphenyls in RECETOX partner countries

PCBs were once considered an industrial miracle due to their exceptional properties: chemical stability, thermal conductivity, non-flammability, and resistance to oxidation. Despite their industrial usefulness, they turned out to be among the most problematic contaminants of the modern era. PCBs were included in the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). National POPs disposal plans, which outline the basic framework for eliminating selected POPs, are the subject of projects coordinated by RECETOX.

Negotiations on a Global Treaty on Plastic Pollution Have Collapsed

In August 2025, representatives from 184 countries gathered in Geneva in an attempt to finalize negotiations and find effective solutions to the increasingly urgent problem of plastic pollution in the environment—especially in the oceans. Unfortunately, even the sixth session failed to produce a finalized treaty text, and the process was suspended. The negotiations, conducted under the UN Environment Programme and lasting nearly three years, have so far failed to fulfill their mission.

2024 Was the Worst Year for Heat-Related Deaths in the Czech Republic in the Past Three Years

Researchers from the ISGlobal research center, in collaboration with the RECETOX center at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University, published a study in Nature Medicine estimating that over 180,000 deaths in Europe during the summer seasons of 2022, 2023, and 2024 were linked to heat. In the Czech Republic, 2024 was by far the worst year in terms of heat-related mortality over the past three years.

Czech population’s exposure to toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons has decreased, a new study shows

Good news: Between 2011 and 2020, the burden of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Czech population decreased. This is shown by a study from the RECETOX team, published in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology. The reduction in exposure occurred during a period when several environmental policies were introduced, including the Air Protection Act, the so-called anti-smoking law, and the boiler subsidy programme.

Researchers of Masaryk University investigate the pollution of the Danube River

With the aim of obtaining a complex picture of the water quality in the Danube and its major tributaries, the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River organises periodic investigations: the Joint Danube Surveys (JDS). The key purpose of JDS is to gather vital data on carefully selected elements of water quality across the entire length of the Danube River and its major tributaries. Since 2013, researchers from the Centre RECETOX have actively contributed to the JDS.

The ISPCWP stands for the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste and Pollution adopted by the Intergovernmental meeting to establish a science-policy panel to contribute further to the sound management of chemicals and waste and to prevent pollution (IM) in Punta del Este, Uruguay. Low levels of greenery and high levels of urbanization may increase the risk of asthma, study shows

A new study conducted by a team of European researchers analyzed data from 14 European cohorts comprising nearly 350,000 participants. The aim was to evaluate the impact of the combined effects of environmental exposures in urban environments on the incidence of asthma in both children and adults. Asthma developed in 7,428 individuals over their lifetime.

Colorectal cancer: towards a diagnostic test

With critical contributions from Czech cohorts, researchers edge closer to microbiome-based screening of colorectal cancer. An international research team coordinated by the University of Trento has demonstrated that the presence of specific microbes in the microbiome is an accurate indication of the disease. The study – conducted using a combination of machine learning and metagenomics and published in Nature Medicine – could make non-invasive screening methods more accurate in the future.

In the Senate of the Czech Republic, a seminar was held dedicated to the eternal chemicals PFAS

Substances known by the abbreviation PFAS are a large group of widely used, industrially produced chemicals that accumulate in the human body and the environment. They are almost non-degradable by natural processes, which is why they are often called 'eternal chemicals.' The Committee on Regional Development, Public Administration, and the Environment of the Senate of the Czech Republic organized a seminar on the issue.

In January 2025, a new international project called DTRIP4H was launched, involving the RECETOX center. Katarzyna Kordas - Fulbright grantee came to RECETOX

Kasia Kordas, associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health at the University at Buffalo, has received a Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Fellowship. Thanks to this support, Dr. Kordas will be able to spend the fall semester at Masaryk University's RECETOX, where she will spend the next four months developing research collaborations with scientists and contributing to the development of the Environment and Health curriculum.

Veronica, originally from South Africa, is working as a postdoc in Lisa Emily Melymuk's research group on the ShipsChem project. She studies the impact of chemicals originating from indoor activities and strong fire safety rules on cruise ships on the crew's health and the environment. Veronica has sailed around the Norwegian coast and reached Iceland on a hybrid-electric ship.
