Innovation of the study programme Computational biology and biomedicine

Dr. Eva Budinská and Assoc. Prof. Matej Lexa, in collaboration with colleagues from the Faculty of Informatics, acquired project "FI 0795/2023 Extension of project and research teaching in the subjects IV110 Project in Bioinformatics and E4014 Project in Mathematical Biology and Biomedicine "as part of the innovation of the study program Computational Biology and Biomedicine, in the specialization Biomedical Bioinformatics.

The project aims to improve and link inter-faculty practical project-based learning by enriching it with research elements in two bioinformatics disciplines:

Artificial Intelligence and Data Processing - specialization Bioinformatics and Systems Biology at the Faculty of Informatics MU (N-UIZD-BIO)

Mathematical Biology and Biomedicine - Biomedical Bioinformatics at the Faculty of Science of MU (N_MBB_BIOMB)

Specifically by improving the content of two projects:

IV110 Project in Bioinformatics (FI)

E4014 Project in Mathematical Biology and Biomedicine - Biomedical Bioinformatics (MU)

We have combined and expanded the teaching of the subjects to cover a model research task from the material collection and DNA sequencing using modern technologies through bioinformatic data processing and presentation of results using IT tools and student micro-conferences.

Unique data and study materials, including video recordings, will also be produced.

Experts from RECETOX MU, FI, CEITEC MU, and the Institute of Biophysics of the AV ČR are involved in innovative teaching.

Students work in mixed interdisciplinary groups to connect and improve their knowledge (our students know more about statistics and biological interpretation, while FI students better understand programming and method development).

As part of the teaching, students have practical laboratory exercises in the RECETOX Microbiome Analysis Laboratories under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Petra Bořilová Linhartová.

On Monday, October 9, the first exercise occurred in these laboratories.
