PAPILLONS: Investigating the Impact of Microplastics in Agricultural Soils

PAPILLONS – Plastic in Agricultural Production: Impacts, Life-cycles and LONg-term Sustainability – is a European research project focused on understanding the sources, behavior, and ecological effects of micro- and nanoplastics in agricultural soils. Microplastics are now recognized as the most widespread anthropogenic contaminant in European agricultural soils, with worst-case concentrations exceeding 0.1% by weight in the topsoil layer.

IRISCC 2nd Open Call for Access opens soon

This call will provide researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals with the opportunity to access cutting-edge research services and facilities addressing climate change-driven risks. Just like in the first call, proposals are welcome from across sectors, including academia, government, and industry, with no specific thematic focus.

Negotiations on a Global Treaty on Plastic Pollution Have Collapsed

In August 2025, representatives from 184 countries gathered in Geneva in an attempt to finalize negotiations and find effective solutions to the increasingly urgent problem of plastic pollution in the environment—especially in the oceans. Unfortunately, even the sixth session failed to produce a finalized treaty text, and the process was suspended. The negotiations, conducted under the UN Environment Programme and lasting nearly three years, have so far failed to fulfill their mission.

2024 Was the Worst Year for Heat-Related Deaths in the Czech Republic in the Past Three Years

Researchers from the ISGlobal research center, in collaboration with the RECETOX center at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University, published a study in Nature Medicine estimating that over 180,000 deaths in Europe during the summer seasons of 2022, 2023, and 2024 were linked to heat. In the Czech Republic, 2024 was by far the worst year in terms of heat-related mortality over the past three years.
