Negotiations on a Global Treaty on Plastic Pollution Have Collapsed
In August 2025, representatives from 184 countries gathered in Geneva in an attempt to finalize negotiations and find effective solutions to the increasingly urgent problem of plastic pollution in the environment—especially in the oceans. Unfortunately, even the sixth session failed to produce a finalized treaty text, and the process was suspended. The negotiations, conducted under the UN Environment Programme and lasting nearly three years, have so far failed to fulfill their mission.
